A new generation of makers works with a machine that earlier generations taught. Their proportions, seam logic, fitting rules and experiments live inside it. Set what the maker inherits, set what the maker intends, and watch a customised shoe, bag, jacket or space suit go from intent to finished piece in fast-making time. Fifteen styles in four families, from a derby to a trench coat to a space suit, read the same seven parameters in their own way, and the morfusione carries one family into the next. An optional band plays what is being made, from jazz and lounge to drone and noise.
Within the variation that earlier generations allowed it, the machine offers variants around the maker's intent. Click one to take it up.
The archive grows
A design adopted by the maker moves the house archetype a little toward itself. This is how a new generation changes what the next one inherits.
The archetype has not yet moved.
What the machine inherits
1970s · Hand-lasting holds the proportions of length, height and toe, and pulls the design toward them.
1990s · CAD patterns hold the seam logic, the cut, the edge and the surface rhythm.
2010s · Custom-fit adapts the piece to the client's measure and reduces waste.
2020s · Generative sets how far the machine may vary what it proposes.
What the maker adds
The intent, set by seven parameters whose meaning changes with the object.
The tool autonomy, which shortens the lead time and widens the proposals.
The augmented skill, which is how well the maker reads and steers the machine.
Radicalism, which pushes the intent away from the middle while loosening the hold of the inheritance, and angularity, which takes every outline from soft curves to razor edges, so that two pieces of the same style can look like different objects.
The adoption of a design, which is the only way the archetype itself ever changes.
How the line sounds
Eight idioms are available. Five belong to jazz and lounge, lounge jazz, bossa lounge, swing, late-night ballad and downtempo nu-jazz, and three go beyond them, spectral drone, minimal phasing and industrial noise. Each has its own progression, comping, bass line, drums and lead voice, or, beyond jazz, its own way of building sound out of partials, loops that drift apart and irregular pulses.
Under auto the band follows the morfusione of the pieces: the shoe suggests swing, the bag lounge, the jacket nu-jazz and the space suit the drone, and between two families the layers change hands one after the other, so that the chords, the bass, the comping, the lead and the drums cross over at different moments instead of fading together.
While the line is followed, the making sets the music: the making speed sets the tempo, the colour of the piece sets the key, the variation range sets the harmonic colour, the tool autonomy sets how freely the lead improvises, the seam logic holds the groove to the grid, the surface pattern sets the density of the band, the client measure sets the size of the room, the material sets the brightness, and the angularity of the shapes sets the edge of the music, from legato and round to staccato and dissonant. Radicalism steepens every one of these links, so that a modest change in the making is heard as a different band.
What the music inherits
The lead quotes a four-bar house theme and varies it as far as the improvisation allows, so that each new hand plays the inherited theme again, and a little differently.
Adopting a design moves the archetype and varies a few notes of the theme along with it, in the way the archive changes what the next generation inherits.
The novelty of the design adds chromatic approach notes, the cut snips and the finished piece rings.
Moving any music control by hand ends the following, and the button restores it.
An illustrative model written for the essay Human Machine, between Co-Learning and Knowledge Transfer. The shapes are parametric sketches and not production patterns, every parameter and every time is stipulated, and the numbers show how the pieces of the argument fit together and are not measurements of any factory. The reference lead time is what the same piece would take without synthetic tooling and without inherited rules, under the same assumptions. Each style carries a stipulated making effort, so that a trench coat takes longer than a tote while the seven parameters stay the same. The morfusione blends the outlines of two families angle by angle and cross-fades their details, and it illustrates how far one parametric intent can travel across families, without being a pattern-making method. The band is a generative sketch, its mappings from the making to the music are stipulated, and its idioms, tempo ranges and chord progressions are conventional and not transcriptions of any recording.
